Synopsis:
In 1876, Nathan Algren, a former U.S. Army captain traumatized by the horrors of the American Indian Wars, is approached to train the newly formed Imperial Japanese Army. Persuaded by the large amount of money offered for his expertise, Algren travels to Japan, where he is taken captive by samurai during a disastrous first battle. As Algren learns about the samurai, he comes to respect them - and pledges to help them protect their traditions from the growing powers that seek to erase them.
